Set the Scene in Six Sentences Sunday - Share the Six!

One of the finest aspects of fiction writing is the ability to set the scene.  Characters act and react, but they don't do so in a vacuum.  In their world, they meet, fall in love, solve problems, sometimes horrendous problems.  Maybe it's a small town, maybe the big city, the green, humid jungle, dust-dry desert, a mountainous region.  On the sea.  Under the sea.  In space!

Setting the scene sets up the unexpected. It's also done by using character dialogue to paint a picture of loveliness, danger, evil, trepidation, excitement, awe...

Give us six sentences that set the scene.  Set the Scene in Six Sentences - Sunday is a new opportunity on the Exquisite Quills Blog to tout your talent.  How have you set the scene or the lead-up in your books?  How have you put the reader into the life of your characters?

Every Sunday, the blog will be open to six-sentence scene-setting.  Just post your six sentences, your name, and one link in the comment box.  We can't wait to read you!

Pass the word!  Open to all!

THE BULL RIDER AND THE BABY
By Jeanine McAdam

And…this internship at the rodeo as a concussion researcher was, sort of, a new start. No more whispers over the tops of microscopes, jokes about Carrie not being able to fit into her lab coat or pitiful looks from the research assistants in the break room. Finally, she had her own lab—even if it was in a tent—and her own test subjects, even if they were surly cowboys. She’d only been at the rodeo for one day, but already decided it was better than staying in New York alone and pregnant.

Excerpt from Love at First Click – Book One in the Bellham Romance series. Available in both ebook and paperback - http://www.amazon.com/Love-First-Click-Bellham-Romances-ebook/dp/B00GH1CWY8/

“I’ll be in my cave for a while catching up on paperwork,” Christina said.

“Okay,” Heather said with a grin. There was nothing cave-like about Christina’s office. Like the rest of Bellham Blooms, the office interior was light, bright, and breezy, decorated with a sense of fun and whimsy. It matched Christina’s personal style, and her personality.

When Heather opened her own shop, she planned to strive for the same sense of motion, color and energy as customers experienced at Bellham Blooms.

Next six from my time travel romance, Thoroughly Modern Amanda.

Excerpt:

I’ll tell him I let you in.”

Amanda shrugged.

“I guess I’ll have a seat then.” She settled back in Norwood’s chair.

Miss Carson’s lips pursed, but she nodded. “I’ll be just outside and alert Mr. Norwood when he returns.”

LADY LUCK
by Julie Lence, Western Historical Romance
Available at: www.amazon.com/dp/B0063WCXO0

"Don't know what she was thinking, staying in a whore house." Lucas stepped out of the tub and grabbed a towel from the bureau.
Missy said she'd keep the women away from him. That was the deal they'd made at the cabin. How she planned to accomplish this was beyond him. He hadn't seen her since Jayden had shown them to their rooms, but he'd seen plenty of Jayden.

This scene is aboard the Golden Dolphin as it crossing the Panama Canal. The H/h are in the hot tub on the deck of the master suite.

The jungle along the shore was dark and impenetrable, and occasionally she could hear the cry of some jungle animal or night bird over the soft sound of the water rushing against the sides of the ship. “All the drama of life and death is playing out over the railing while we’re here in this cocoon of safety. This whole experience feels like a dream…just a little unreal.”

NIGHT SINS

A dark, urban vampire tale by B.J. McCall.

Intrigued, Egan followed the scents. Three rooftops later, he slipped over the edge of an abandoned building across the street from the Cemetery, the high-rise complex housing the soulless population of Blight. He hunkered down on the rusted fire escape. The bluish ultraviolet lights illuminating the walls surrounding the Cemetery would fry any vampire attempting to scale them so his kind were forced to use old tunnels or sewer drains like rats. The UV lights cast an eerie glow on the intersection below. A female agent dressed in the distinctive Dead Souls uniform, red tunic-style jacket and black pants, stood beside a reinforced red and white DSA vehicle equipped with UV spotlights mounted on the roof.

Excerpt from Beauty in the Breakdown--a contemporary GLBTQ M/M adult romance.

He is a slim, nimble young man, maybe in his midtwenties. He’s a pretty normal character, except that he makes me think things that, once upon a time, people would have been sent to asylums for thinking. He’s beautiful and fair-skinned and gentle and shy. He has a problem with people touching his body, and he gets harassed for it. Around his eyes sit horn-rimmed glasses, just the right fit over his elegant nose and cheeks, protecting the greenest eyes I’ve ever seen. Capping his head is wispy, soft, and naturally untamable hair of a color I likened to that of a dingy fire. His hands aren’t large, but they aren’t small either, with slender fingers that match the knobbiness of his hips and shoulders perfectly. He is him, and God did he make me think.
