The cruise I took last summer made a big impression on me and has inspired more than one book. This is the most literal one, taking place mostly on the ship. It was fun to weave in the sensory details from my experience. The most memorable was the night the seas were so rough necklaces danced on the racks in the gift shop. That’s a pivotal moment in my story because Rhonda finds out Simon is a shape shifter. The safety briefing inspired another scene, although I don’t think my husband would have been too happy if Simon pressed me against the wall and frisked me like he did Rhonda!

Like my story, cruises have a light side and a dark side. Sitting on deck with an exotic drink and dreaming of romance is the upside. Rough seas and the possibility of sinking is the dark side. The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald by Gordon Lightfoot gives me chills every time I listen to it. The story it tells inspired Simon’s past and makes it hard for Rhonda to turn her back on Simon, despite what helping him will cost her.
