TO HAVE & TO HOLD
by E. Ayers

Drexel greeted Melissa with an oversized umbrella. “Hi, you look ready.”

“I am.” She looked at the Ferrari he was driving and just about died. “Where did you get the car?”

He laughed. “I get to use anything in the garage. It’s a perk to my job.”

“Nice perk.” She settled into the soft seat and prayed he wasn’t going to drive it as though they were in a Grand Prix race.

Blonde Demolition
The hot spray hit Mallory’s sore muscles like a thousand needle points. Her heart raced. Her mind sped past it. “What could he want?”
“Ask me.” She heard his voice through the translucent panel of the shower door. That voice that could send a thrill through her. That voice that had whispered to her of naked pleasures. That voice attached to a body that could fulfill those pleasures.
She shuddered not surprised to see him. He had a knack for pushing through her boundaries.
“Do you mind. I’m naked, Trey.”
His laugh rumbled from the depths of his amazing body. “I’ve seen you naked. In fact I could probably draw a road map of your body.”

From paranormal romance novella, Dreaming Josie.

Kyle scanned the field, hoping he'd see her again. A green gown caught his gaze. A dark-haired woman knelt on the ground bent over a reclining soldier. This had to be her.

He raced over to them and stared into those dark brown eyes. The eyes he'd dreamed about.

"Hello," he said.

She glanced up and frowned. "Good day, soldier."

The reclining reenactor took a swig from his canteen and waved her off. "I'm fine. Thanks." He rose and dusted himself off.

From my romantic comedy mystery, Temporarily Employed:

The something in the truck line sounded similar to approaches used in past dating experiences. "Just a minute." I closed the door partially to release the chain, then opened it. “Why can’t you just tell me whatever it is?”
“No. I want to show you---”
“Not a Picasso?” I asked.
“No.”
“Not an iguana?”
A perplexed expression crossed his face. “A what?”
“Not your pet worm?”
“What pet worm?”
“Not---”
“Look, I don’t know what you’re thinking. The only worms I know about are for fishing.”

A Beautiful Day in Alaska

“Look. You’re stuck in this dingy hotel room with me until tomorrow morning. There’s nothing that you or I can do to get to Seattle, so let’s make some lemonade out of this lemon. Tell me about the most beautiful place in Alaska, and I’ll get a rental car and take you there.”
Robin said nothing for a long minute. Then she spoke.
“You can’t drive to the most beautiful places in Alaska, Charlie. You have to fly there.”
“Okay, well, cut this cheewacko. . .”
“. . .cheechako,” she corrected.
“. . .some slack. Tell me a beautiful place in Alaska that you can drive to, and I’ll take you there.”
She looked at him. Her green eyes were so full and of sorrow and resignation.
“It’s gonna be all right. You’ll see,” Charlie said. He put his right arm around her shoulder and pulled her into him. At first she resisted, but then he felt her relax.
“Broken hearts heal. They just do,” he whispered.

The house creaked again, followed by a rhythmic sound – like footsteps. Jenny jerked upright, her ears straining. Had she heard a voice?

She must still be half asleep, dreaming. Imagining her grandparents were still here. Wishful thinking.

Downstairs, a door closed. Jenny clutched the blanket. Imagination be damned. She was not alone.

For a long moment, she sat frozen. During her ten years in New York City, she had never been burglarized or mugged. It seemed impossible that such a thing should happen now, here, in an off-season art camp five miles outside of Jemez Springs, New Mexico.

From Cowboy In Trouble, in the Cowboy Up 2 boxed set:

The door across the hall opened and by the time she turned around, Colby stood there in nothing but a towel. Hubbahubba, a very small towel, since she kept her nice big ones downstairs and hadn’t remembered to provide him one.
Um. Dripping, mostly naked, and looking as surprised as she felt… Wow. Those shoulders looked even better without a shirt. He had the prettiest eyes. Did guys like their eyes being called pretty? Whatever. Nice green-gray. And oh, how she’d appreciate a wardrobe malfunction right about now, just a little slippage of that towel.
“Ahem.”
“Er,” she answered ever-so-intelligently. “Sorry.”

From Her Hero, due out March 6: http://amzn.com/B00TKXN6KO

Rowdy Pierce confirmed the girl's location when he heard her terrified screams. He shattered the rickety wooden door of the wattle and daub hut with a kick from his size twelve and a half boot. In the flickering light of an old-fashioned kerosene lamp, the young woman flailed her arms and legs at the man on top of her. He dove across the dim room, yanked the bastard off her, and without a second thought, slit his throat, dumping the son of a bitch face down into the dust.

When he turned back to the woman, she'd scrambled to a sitting position against the wall, wrapping her arms around her drawn up knees to cover herself. She stared up at him with a wide-eyed look of horror and revulsion. He didn't blame her for that. She'd been traumatized, possibly raped, and didn't know the big, bearded man had come to rescue her. She didn't know that for all his adult life, rescuing people was his job, first in the military, and now with his own company. He wiped the blood from his knife on the terrorist's clothing, sheathed it in his boot, and approached the girl. There was no time to waste.

From La Déesse Noire: The Black Goddess, available for pre-order 3-14-15.

"We were children in the royal court of the second Rajaram of Satara. Our mothers were tawaifs, of course, and so we knew the tradition would be passed on to us.”

“It’s so unfortunate that—”

Her laughter was sharper than broken glass, cutting like a bloody blade through his sincere compassion for any woman forced to life in the demi-monde.

“Unfortunate, my lord? Unfortunate? That we should be raised up among the most influential women in the Maratha? That we should have the ear of the highest nobles and ministers, more powerful than any woman outside the royal family?” Her eyes narrowed, but the bitter laughter drifted into a chuckle that pitied only his delusion.

“No, my lord, what is unfortunate is Kali was not exalted as I, as her mother, to blossom into the full promise of her power. It is unfortunate she is forced to this life as entertainment for Englishmen who have no concept of her value.

I wish you not to doubt these words, Lord Rookscombe: were Kali in the India where Rohana and I learned our trade, you would not be high enough in the nobility to warrant an introduction. You would never lay eyes on her.”

Rook sat up straight, ready to defend his family name, his title, and his honor, but found no words equal to the look in her eye as she continued, “A night in her bed—one minute in her bed—would be an impossibility, for she would be the favored concubine of a rajah or maharajah, as were her mother and grandmother. A man of your rank, a minor landowner, would risk death for looking askance at her.”

From Magic and Steel - Mt'wan Comraich - a novella of duty and honor, love and adventure from the Chronicles of the Dragshi.

Her smile added to the desire Kedar fought to control. “After all these sevenday in the saddle, I prefer to walk.”

An acknowledgement of her wishes, he offered her a crooked elbow as suitable for an escort—or the husband he was supposed to be. At first he thought she would refuse, but with a slight smile she laid her fingers on his arm. The heat that burned through the cloth bore little relation to her light touch. I just hope the ceoltiers play tunes I’m familiar with. Otherwise all those hours practicing the moves of formal court will be wasted. More than anything he wanted to dance with Mairin, to hold her in his arms.
