WEDDING VOWS
E. Ayers

The discomfort over what felt like an invasion of her privacy made her want to lash out. She knew it was wrong, but after years of practice on siblings, she couldn’t stop herself. “By the way, the pearls add a nice touch. Not many men have the guts to pull off the look.”
She turned on her heel to return to her car, but not before catching the look on his face, which was priceless and well worth the jab. ***Still in the closet?***

THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME
by Peggy Jaeger

He kissed her forehead. “Ever since that day, all I’ve wanted is a second chance. Now,” he pulled her body closer, wrapped both arms around her small waist, his hand resting just above the dent in her spine. “We’re both a little older, a little more mature. Some of us are much more experienced—”
“And conceited.”
“Experienced,” he said, the laugh in his voice quiet and seductive, “and things can be so much better.”

This weekend, I'm all about THIN AS SMOKE, my gay retro mystery featuring Dashiell Hammett as one of the characters. These are the opening seven sentences, as PIs Michael and Simon sit waiting for their undercover contact in a gay bar:

Michael felt warmer than usual, starting in a most usual place. Sitting next to Simon Hart with only the man’s jutting left elbow to define the mute “keep your distance” perimeter around him, Michael’s cock twitched and grew as his own smile jumped and deepened.

He lowered his head so he could inhale the faint musk of a cologne, whose origin, he knew, was a spot just under a pale-veined left ear. Eyeing the damp tendrils of black hair curling around Simon’s stiff white collar, he willed himself to keep his mouth level with his own whiskey glass and his tongue in his own mouth instead of in Simon’s.

In the past, he’d forced Simon to play the part when they were in this special place, even as the reticent Simon fought to remain untouched. Now, after getting to know the man and learning his deep fears, and desires, Michael was far more solicitous of his friend’s feelings. In fact, he thought dryly, by now I’m becoming utterly trained, a falcon on the tall man’s wrist, still predatory, yet becoming more and more a taxidermist’s specimen.

From American Victorian romance novella, The Physician's Irish Lady.

“It’s not charity. I’m alone and in want of a dining companion.”

She shook her head again.

“I don’t want to leave you here alone, and I am very hungry,” he insisted.

Her mouth titled up into a weak smile. “I suppose I could use a bite.” She reached out and enfolded her hand in his.

Good afternoon! Here's seven lines from HER BEST MAN, book one in my Left at the Altar series:

The whole situation was insane, and a little surreal. Had the whole universe decided to gang up on her, first with her wedding debacle and now this? She was standing in front of a man she barely knew wearing nothing but a towel while he calmly informed her that he'd just committed an act of - Sarah hunted for the right word - fraud, perjury, impersonation, sedition? Whatever the correct legal word, it wasn't good. In these security conscious times his actions would hardly be laughed off as a boyish prank. But first things first. She needed to put some clothes on.

"You call yourself a healer, woman? My horse would be gentler."

"I was under the impression a rugged warrior such as yourself was impervious to pain."

He glanced at her. "Are you always this peevish? I'll give you fair warning, Lortia is no place for a spoiled princess. Remember, you are now a queen. I expect you to act like it."

Happy Sunday! Hope you enjoy this 7 sentence excerpt from Cinderella Blue, a Romantic Comedy available at most ebook sellers including Amazon: http://authl.it/B00U6T0I34

As he passed the glass display window of a photographer's studio, he saw a woman inside--her hair looked as if she'd styled it with a weed whacker. The woman wore a wedding dress, but instead of a bridal bouquet, she held a handgun.

Bruce drew his Glock, eased the door open, and a bell over the door jingled. The woman whirled--holding her gun in the same shooter's stance as he. "Take it easy, lady. Maybe the photographer took some lousy pictures of you, but that's no reason to shoot him, is it?"

Her grin never wavered--neither did her gun--as she said, "That's funny, and you're kind of cute--now lay your gun on the floor,"

This is from my new release, A Rancher of Her Own.

Silently, Pete watched Jane make her way around the barn.

Over the years he had avoided coming in contact with her, his long-distance eyesight must have begun to fail. He hadn’t realized she looked this good close-up. Tall and slim, she had pale, perfect skin he wouldn’t dare touch with his workman’s hands and straight black hair that glistened in the light, tempting him to run his fingers through it.

Every time he’d seen her, she was dressed head-to-foot in black, and now was no exception. He didn’t get why anyone would feel an attraction for the color, a stark reminder to him of funerals and the day they’d laid his mama to rest. But he managed to look beyond Jane’s taste in clothes long enough to check her out.

Whenever he let his mind go, it always came back to her. He had noticed her the moment she entered the cafe, as if some sort of magnetism drew his gaze. Her long, golden-blond hair draped across her shoulders. When she came through the door, her laughter floated across the room and settled over him. She was a soothing breath of fresh air in an otherwise dismal world. His world was consumed with the bleak, decaying dregs of Boston. He was mesmerized to find a luminous entity through the seemingly never ending display of death.
