NEW BEGINNINGS

Sophie Levesque stared at the attorney in front of her, waiting for some answers. She and her little sister, Mia, had been quietly sitting in Mr. O’Connor’s office for more than half an hour, learning about the details of their inheritance.
Once he was finished, silence hung in the air before she asked with raised eyebrows. “Who?”
“Clara Catherine Bellinger.”
Mia leaned closer to her elder sister and gave a soft tug on Sophie’s shirt. “Who is she?”

From A KILLING AT EL KAB

Even in the best of situations Dr. Paul Licht was not an attractive man. When angry, his normally small eyes squeezed shut to tiny slits and his mouth spread wide, giving him the look of nothing so much as an enraged pig, an illusion heightened by his nearly equal height to width ratio. At that moment any self respecting porker would have run screaming from the sight, but humans are neither as intelligent nor uninhibited, and so at least some of the archaeologists assembled faced him down.

From Mated for Life A Jake Carrington Mystery book three.
A disappointment, yet again—why does she continue to deny me? Not once has she kept her promise? I've kept mine. She continues to refuse my terms. For the sixth time all my preparations for the wedding are tossed by the wayside. No wedding, no vows. Selfish, that’s what Ciara is. This one’s like the rest of them. All she does is cry…all day, all night. What more could she possibly want? I’ve offered her the world. I can see it in her eyes. She plans on running away again. Not this time bitch.
He sharpened the knife brushing away the tears as they streamed down his cheeks.

Instead of lines today, I want to say Thank You, Rose. I love the way you frame this post opportunity. It forces me to really consider the impact of the opening lines in every chapter, not just the first chapter.
Thank you.

It is so wonderful to have Exquisite Quills back, so we can share, and also meet new books. This is from

A QUESTION OF HONOR
She knew that walk. With a slight hesitation in one leg, he prowled like a wounded predator, conditioned to succeed against the most dangerous game of all. Even limping, his reactions would be instantaneous, his balance superior. By itself, his body would be a weapon. He'd be the best man to have on your side in a battle. After the battle, he'd unwind with a drink and a woman. The drink would be strong and straight. The woman would be bosomy and not too bright. He'd very likely spend more time with the drink than the woman.

The next Stormhaven book, A QUESTION OF FAITH comes out 10/1. For now you can learn how Sydney recognizes Devin without knowing him.

Here’s are the very first lines of my Edwardian romance ‘A Valet’s Duty’.

“You are joking, aren’t you? I’m a valet, not a stable lad.”

Henry Simpkins had only been at Taverslow a couple of months, and he wondered if he’d made a mistake by moving out to the country.

“You are to serve as valet to his lordship’s brother, and Mr. Rafe is very fond of his dogs.”

Henry noticed Fenton the butler’s faint smirk…

from BEACHCOMBER HEAT
"What the hell was Dane doing? What the hell was she doing? Shana scrambled to her feet and stepped back from the edge of the dock as if the water might suck her in after him. Was it her fault he jumped into the harbor? More likely it was the heat."

Thank you so much for the opportunity Rose. Great to have Exquisite Quills back.

This is the first five lines from the first chapter of BELOVED ENEMY, my latest release and the third in the Destiny Trilogy (Each book is complete and can be read as a 'stand alone'.

“Hold tight, Shifter, this is going to be bumpy.”

The small vehicle careened down the incline, ploughing
a deep trough and throwing up a cloud of dirt and sand.
Eventually it plunged through the tangled branches of a
group of slender trees and bushes at the bottom, and
shuddered to a halt. For a moment, sandy soil and a blur
of green and brown severed leaves and twigs on the
external scanner obscured the view. Cat Kincaid ground
her teeth and activated a control.

In All Honour
This scene takes place in Bath, autumn, 1812

‘Sarah! Where are you going in such a hurry?’
That peevish voice could only belong to James. Reluctantly, Sarah stopped and waited for him to cross the street. It was busy with carriages and he had to dodge and run to get across, which did not improve his temper. His face was just as pale and haggard as when she had last seen him.
