From upcoming release, The Phoenix Syndrome:

Jeri wore an outfit just like the one she wore to the city last weekend—caramel-colored tailored trousers, a pretty coral silk blouse, and an ivory cashmere sweater tossed over her shoulders. Her jewelry was gold, minimal, and classy. She looked more like she was going to church than to a rock concert.
Next to Jeri, I looked like I’d stepped through a time portal from the 1960s. I wore my favorite outfit from our shopping excursion, the wide leg palazzo pants in a colorful geometric pattern. My silky cobalt tank flowed into the waistband and draped over, covering the five pounds I’d put on without noticing over the last five years. A drapey jacket, made in the same printed fabric as the pants, fell in points at the front. I’d even sprung for matching platform sandals. These, I thought, I can walk in.

From British Regency novel, Dangerous Deceit (as Romy Gemmell), when Lydia dresses as a boy for an escapade.

On her return home, Lydia began to prepare the next essential part of her plan. Excited and full of expectation, she searched out the clothes to wear for her disguise. The breeches and jacket had been slightly big when she used to wear them and now fitted well enough to pass. She would need to bind her chest with some linen to flatten it as much as possible before putting on the white shirt.

When she stood before the mirror in her male clothes, Lydia was surprised to find she cut rather a fine figure. Not quite as tall as many young men perhaps, but she could pass for a youth. She let down her hair and pulled it completely back from her face. She would tie it in a queue and top it with a tricorn. If that looked a little out of fashion, Elizabeth could explain that her ‘cousin’ had been in the country for too long.

Fortunately, she had kept a pair of her brother’s boots from when his feet were smaller and, with a little wedging at the toes, they should do very well. All that remained was to find a necktie and she would be ready. She would pack everything into a large bag separate from her other luggage and exchange one outfit for the other at Elizabeth’s home. There, it was all quite simple, she told her reflection. She was ready for her adventure.

With the skill of long practice one of the women prepared the eye
make-up, grinding a nugget of green-banded malachite to a powder on
a carved stone palette, then mixing it with just a few drops of clear
liquid from an alabaster jar to make it thin enough to paint over
Elissa’s eyelids. Judging from the grinding sounds while Elissa kept her
eyes shut allowing the paint to dry, another of the women was mixing
the dark eyeliner. She had seen a little of the process in the pleasure
women’s tent, but the serving girls there had not been as skillful nor as
experienced as the pharaoh’s old women.
While painting her face seemed to take forever, dressing took no
time at all. A simple pleated linen dress was dropped over her head and
belted with gold. To Elissa’s relief it was thick enough to obscure her
body outlines down to nothing more than a vague suggestion. A king’s
ransom of inlaid gold and gems was fastened around her neck and
great bracelets slipped on her arms. By contrast, the sandals they fitted
to her feet were of simple skin and made almost identically to the
plastic beach thongs she wore at home.
Finally a great, elaborately braided wig was placed over her hair
and topped with a simple golden band. The whole costume might be
very elegant, but it was also very heavy. Elissa felt as if she were being
pressed into the ground.
When at last a hand mirror of polished bronze was placed into
her hand, it was as if Elissa were looking at a stranger. The face
reflected in the gold colored disc was no longer her own. Everyday
Elissa McLaughlin of Dallas, Texas, USA, was now a princess of
Ancient Egypt. She gulped.

By the time I finally reached my office, the dried orange juice made the front of my red suit look like an abstract painting. My spare outfits turned out to be a single outfit: a butt-ugly black dress I only wore to funerals. I hoped it wasn’t an omen.

A footstep behind her made Shannon look around.

In the doorway stood a fantastic creature, a being from some long ago
fairy tale, clad in azure robes of stiff, embroidered brocade, a bejeweled loincloth, golden sandals. A plumed crown of macaw’s feathers rested upon straight black hair.
Ear disks studded with jasper and carnelian echoed the design on the elaborate electrum pectoral covering his chest, and his face was obscured with magical symbols, colors blending together in a rainbow of design, eyes a startling bright green.

Shannon took a deep breath and felt slightly lightheaded, because beneath all that finery, hidden under the facial decorations, it was simply Semris, smiling at her.

“I know it is improper, but I thought I should be the one to escort you to the Temple. Are you ready, Amor?” He held out one hand, fingers encircled with jade and
turquoise rings, bands of the same precious stones covering one arm.

Clasping the Emperor’s hand, Shannon let her bridegroom lead her out of the chamber.

Nick walked over to the mirror.

He didn’t know what he was expecting but certainly not the figure staring back at him.

A black-bearded sheik, robed in white flowing garments, with dark eyes staring from under the banner of the white headdress. Nick caught at the edge of the scarf, pulling it across his face and tucking it under the edge of the cord.

Looking at himself like that, imagining this white-robed figure on the back of that silver horse now resting in the stable, he could almost believe they might have a chance at that award. Pulling the mask-like edge of the scarf loose, he opened
the door and went down the stairs.

Sidney was speaking to Gus as he came into sight and turned to look at him as he stepped from the stairs into the living room. Her voice trailed away and she stood there, mouth open. Gus had a similar look on his own face.

Nick swept them a bow, raising his hand to touch it with a flourish to his forehead, lips, and heart. Dramatic, yeah, but he couldn’t help it.

“That does it!” Gus exclaimed. “You’re it, boy. Now, change clothes and let’s eat. We’ve got a lot of work ahead of us!”

Ashley Josslyn, tall, blond, and dressed to dandified perfection, was framed in the doorway.

He tossed his hat into the chair Donal’s clothing had recently vacated. It was the latest fashion, low-crowned and wide-brimmed, a style affected by artists and other
bohemian types, as well as the very young. Dropping into another chair, he leaned back and stretched out his legs, clad in dove-gray trousers, before him. His black low
Wellingtons peeked from under the hems.
