I could say that the
genesis of Second Chance and my Chances trilogy started when, at
the privilege of a family friend, I discovered Lake Tahoe over a decade ago.
But its conception probably occurred long before that. As an only child, books
were my default playmates. And if a novel ended abruptly or I found the conclusion
unsatisfactory, I would simply continue the story in my head. So I could
attribute the trilogy’s origin to fate, kismet, or the luck of the draw.
But it’s more seminal than that. It really started in my childhood
imagination.
In those days our imaginations
had little competition for our attention. There were only a few television
stations, no video games and the computer of today was a thing of science
fiction. My imagination could soar infinitely. Characters, layered in
observation and steeped in expectation were formed with each new acquaintance.
The framework of a story was subtlety built as innocence became experience and
naivety became discernment. And a serendipitous cross county trip in my
affecting teenage years started a love affair with California, a frisson that
continues thirty years later and provided the perfect backdrop for it all to
come together. I hope my Chances trilogy will take you there. And
you’ll leave a little piece of your heart behind too.
