Set the Scene in Six Sentences - Sunday

One of the finest aspects of fiction writing is the ability to set the scene.  Characters act and react, but they don't do so in a vacuum.  In their world, they meet, fall in love, solve problems, sometimes horrendous problems.  Maybe it's a small town, maybe the big city, the green, humid jungle, dust-dry desert, a mountainous region.  On the sea.  Under the sea.  In space!

Setting the scene is also done by using character dialogue to paint a picture of loveliness, danger, evil, trepidation, excitement, awe...

Give us six sentences that set the scene.  Set the Scene in Six Sentences - Sunday is a new opportunity on the Exquisite Quills! Blog to tout your talent.  How have you set the scene in your books?  How have you put the reader into the life of your characters?

Every Sunday, the blog will be open to six-sentence scene-setting.  Just post your six sentences, your name, and one link in the comment box.  We can't wait to read you!

Pass the word!  Open to all!

She’d been shocked at the intense jolt of carnal pleasure his dark, dangerous good looks had sent through her belly.

Sex on two legs.

Worn jeans lovingly encased muscular thighs.

His straight, black mane flopped over his forehead accentuating deeply set eyes and an angular face.

A mustache and closely cropped goatee couldn’t soften his strong jaw line.

And the glint of a gold hoop in his left ear did not, in any way, lead her to suspect he might be gay.

Nicky Mahoney’s whispered word carried the scent of cigarettes and Juicy Fruit gum. Haunting hazel eyes beneath half-closed lids coaxed her to do as he asked. He pulled the car door closed banging her knees. His arm circled her and his hand rested on her exposed thigh.
The muscles in her legs tightened against his bare thighs as she unsuccessfully attempted to put distance between her and his naked chest. In all her almost fifteen years, Sara Delaney had never been close to a boy her family didn’t know, much less sitting on one’s lap in the back of a 48 Packard.

This is a scene from my new Scottish Regency novel, Midwinter Masquerade, where the hero's hoydenish niece, Annabelle, is stuck up a tree.

The first step was completed when she heard the sound of hooves coming closer still and knew the rider must be very near. Not risking a further glance, Annabelle moved her other foot to the next
branch. But she neglected to check it was thick or strong enough to take her weight.

The branch cracked. Annabelle tried to shift her weight back up to the previous branch, but her arms were too tired and all feeling was gone from her stiff fingers.

As she finally lost her grip and knew she was about to fall from the tree, she heard someone shout, “Kit!”

Here's a sample of what's to come from book2 in The Witchy Wolf and the Wendigo -- a story that begins with a question: What does an immortal Native American shaman do when the grave he’s sworn to watch over for all eternity disappears under urban development?

In this scene, Eli's hatred for Ash begins anew. What better way to strike at your enemy than through those he cares for?

It was this very outrage over Ashkewheteasu that made him regret killing Nawkaw. He should have pleaded with the elder not to take Ashkewheteasu as his successor, or at least asked him to wait until the boy was older before he decided.

Thinking of Ashkewheteasu left a bad taste in his mouth and filled the car with the stink of the Red Realm. Scowling, he rolled down the window and opened another tin of Altoids before pulling into the gas station lot.

Thumbing through the Quick Mart’s phone directory, Eli read off the names to himself: Rook, Roper, Ronald, Rosalini. There you are... Dr.Olivia Rosalini, DVM. 622 Evergreen Road. He smiled and tore the page out.

This Six-Sentence-Scene is from my erotic western romance, Gambling with Love. The H, Marshal Nick Foster, has caught up with professional gambler and former lover, Lainie Conrad, and he must arrest her...

His eyes flew open, and he grunted at the sudden shock of cold steel rammed into his bare belly.

Looking down, he stared at the .41 caliber, over-under Remington derringer Lainie held firmly in her grip—same gun she’d pulled on him in New Orleans.

Slowly he lifted his gaze to lock with hers.

“There’s nothing quite like a gun shoved in your gut to kill the romance.”

Her eyes were narrow slits of anger; her jaw was set in unwavering determination.

He’d seen this look and the gun before, and this was shaping up to be a similarly unpleasant experience.

This comes from my spicy novella, One Stormy Night, just released exclusively on Amazon.

She sagged as hope began to deteriorate. Everything about this hunting excursion was slowly going bad.
Scott stepped away to put more wood on the fire, and she crouched down, letting the heat warm her hands as she pushed the disappointment from her mind. Embers flew into the sky like fireworks when he tossed more wood over the flickering flames. The fire hissed and crackled softly. It would have been a romantic setting if she wasn’t worried about being found.

Hi everyone, I kept meaning to join in the fun. It's late but I thought I'd go ahead with six sentences from Red Lioness Tamed, a sci fi erotic romance that I've revised and will re-release as an Indie ebook. This is how chapter one begins.

"Frax! My brain feels like it’s been spun out of cobwebs." Sun Rocket squeezed her eyelids open and shut several times. Anything to clear her head.

Aware she lay on a hard metallic surface, Sun Rocket slightly altered her position. After blowing out a large breath, she attempted to open her eyes.

"Frax it to the sun! More cobwebs," she angrily complained.
