Here's an excerpt from my award-winning medieval romance MY LADY'S TREASURE:

If Brant hoped his annoying words would goad her into revealing herself, he would not succeed.

She would come out from the wooden screen when she felt like it.

If she felt like it.

A giddy laugh bubbled inside Faye. She would wait him out. Stay here, silent and defiant, until he yawned with boredom and decided to see if, in fact, she hid behind the screen—in which case she would have ample warning to aim her pots of ointment.

“Good man,” Greya said, sounding nervous. “Mayhap if you wait outside—”

“I will wait here.”

The old woman huffed.

When the silence dragged, guilt nagged at Faye. Her willfulness made the situation very difficult for Greya. ’Twas not fair to impose upon her friendship, or her home, in such a manner.

“Milady,” Brant called, an ominous note in his voice. “I shall count to three. If, by that time, you have not appeared—”

Another command! What an arrogant, insufferable—

“One.”

Her chin tilted up a notch, even as a tremor rippled through her. She raised one of the pots, preparing her aim. She would wait him out. Aye. Excellent plan.

“Two.”

Her hands grew damp, threatening her secure grip. Soon, he would storm over to fetch her, and then—thwack!

What if she missed? She had a difficult enough time swatting flies.

What if she hit him? Would blood spatter? What if his injury left a scar?

What if she accidentally killed him?

“Three.”

Oh, God! She lurched to the edge of the screen.

Arms crossed, Brant stood with one hip braced against the trestle table. His glittering gaze locked with hers before a roguish smile tilted up the corner of his mouth. “There you are. I thought I was going to have to fetch you myself.”

Here's a piece from FOREWARNING.

“What did you bring,” she asked.

“You’ll see.” He gazed out over the distant ridges and turned to her with a huge grin. “Man, it’s been a long time since I’ve been here. I didn’t realize how much I missed riding up in the hills. I wonder if our ‘table’ is still there.”

He climbed up the rocks a ways and called. “Here it is. Want to give it a try?”

Kasey scrambled up beside him and helped him unpack the saddlebags. His light-hearted mood proved infectious and Kasey put aside her worries as they laid the food out on a small rock shelf that stuck out almost level with the ground. When they were kids the outcrop had been just the right height to serve as a ‘dining’ table. Now it was much too low, but they decided to use it anyways.

“Amazing how things shrink as you get older.” she commented.

“Not all things,” Jim replied in a suggestive tone. “Some things get bigger.”

She couldn’t resist asking, “Such as…?”

“Such as …” He paused and let her wait for a few beats. “noses, feet and ears.” He chuckled at her surprised expression. “Gotcha, didn’t I? It’s true. They all just keep getting larger. Just think what we have to look forward to in our old age—big noses.”

“Speak for yourself, buddy. I’ll never have a big one.” She put her hands on her hips in mock offense. “I always tell the truth,” she continued in a superior tone. “You’re the one who’s going to have to worry about his snout growing.”

He looked at her with an indignant expression. “And what about all those moonlight rides you snuck out of the house to take?”

Heather smiled and shook her head. “You’re such a goof ball.”

“Yeah,” Joel agreed. “How do you feel about goof balls?”

Heather shrugged. “I can only handle one goof ball at a time.”

Joel grinned. “I can only be one goof ball at a time. Sounds like a match made in heaven.”
