Set the Scene in Six Sentences - Sunday

One of the finest aspects of fiction writing is the ability to set the scene.  Characters act and react, but they don't do so in a vacuum.  In their world, they meet, fall in love, solve problems, sometimes horrendous problems.  Maybe it's a small town, maybe the big city, the green, humid jungle, dust-dry desert, a mountainous region.  On the sea.  Under the sea.  In space!

Setting the scene is also done by using character dialogue to paint a picture of loveliness, danger, evil, trepidation, excitement, awe...

Give us six sentences that set the scene.  Set the Scene in Six Sentences - Sunday is a new opportunity on the Exquisite Quills! Blog to tout your talent.  How have you set the scene in your books?  How have you put the reader into the life of your characters?

Every Sunday, the blog will be open to six-sentence scene-setting.  Just post your six sentences, your name, and one link in the comment box.  We can't wait to read you!

Pass the word!  Open to all!

As the sky turned a deep purple, seared by the moon's beaming clarity, Selene's room expanded. The walls pulled back, the ceiling rose, and the floor lowered to make a gigantic suite, richly carpeted and curtained in the deep, late twilight; lots of tables and cupboards, but plenty of room to manoeuvre. With a flourish of the deep green curtains, her young, slim, tanned lover tiptoed in through the balcony window, wearing khaki shorts and white singlet. These Selene unbuckled, and pulled down, stripping him down to black bathing trunks so that he, in style, could help her off with her rustling, glistening, shimmering ball gown. With gentle, knowing hands, he undid her back zip, and then turned to face her. He unclasped the waist to part the airy dress until gravity drew it down to caress the carpet as a parabola, a floral parachute.

If Heaven was a summer sky and a T.V. left on mute, then the Underworld was a starry night and an electric guitar with amps. Unfortunately, the twinkling lights hovering from the darkened cavern were actually souls burning in eternal damnation. The plush king-sized bed beneath her cradled her body with its silk coverings, and a black sheet shielded her otherwise nude body. The material binding her wrists to the headboard tightened when she attempted to turn toward the hearth, but the velvet material protected her from rope burn. The fire roared to life an instant before Dheath appeared in its place.

Kay pushed to her feet, facing out to the scenic lake created out of a stretch of the Colorado River and the rugged land beyond shimmering with heat. Work, right, but it was too early in the day for the hard afternoon light she needed for the Coyote Point painting. She was too restless to read or fish and not in the mood to take the boat over to the marina, chat with George, and buy ice.
She rolled her shoulders and stretched, enjoying the hot air licking over her wet skin. As she wiggled her feet in the sand and gravel-bottomed shallows, a flurry of minnows darted past her ankles, and her silver toe ring glinted beneath the clear water. She paused, caught by the possibilities in the sparkling sun on water and the intricate, shifting reflections over gravel.

Blake preferred doing nails to cutting hair and Marissa was the opposite, so they were a business partnership made in heaven. Ten years after cosmetology school and they owned a successful shop that they had just moved to a larger location across the street from the local firehouse.
He loved his home and his career and most recently he loved seeing the gorgeous fireman who had started visiting the salon for a weekly buzz cut.
Mitch Domanico was the kind of guy Blake had spent his life dreaming about. The first day he'd walked into the salon, Blake had thought he was seeing a mirage. Tall and muscular with dark hair and blue eyes, he'd smiled at their receptionist, Julie, and flirted playfully.

A cowboy, a she-wolf and a magic Santa hat.

Merry Mate by B.J. McCall

Banning Hayes sighed as she zipped past him, skates flying across the ice- covered lake. The residents of Elk Mountain were gathered for the annual Christmas party. Dozens were skating, but Banning’s gaze was glued to Sierra’s lithe frame.
He eased back in the lawn chair he’d set up in the snow and waited for Sierra to make another pass. Her amber-brown gaze caught his and Banning tipped his hat as she passed by. She returned his smile and waved.

From: A Winter Knight’s Vigil by Shauna Aura Knight

“Here.” Tristan drew them under the boughs of the larger pine tree. The huge branches had bowed under the weight of the snow, making a small canopied room around the trunk of the tree. He leaned Amber against the tree trunk, kissing her hotly, and she growled, practically crawling up his body, her fingers trying to get at his flesh. He was gratified that she seemed as eager to be with him as he was with her. After the morning, he’d wondered if she’d try to push him away, but he couldn’t stand not touching her.
