The Bull Rider and the Bare Boycotter
By Jeanine McAdam

Jesus, Logan needed to talk to someone, and it had to be someone who knew him well. Someone who had stepped over all the crap life offered and still stood at his side. Yes, the man was a pain in the ass, said inappropriate things, and never shut up, but he was always there for his family.

“Caleb,” Logan yelled into the phone. It sounded like the moron was vacuuming with the television on. “It’s me.”

“Are you okay?” His brother’s voice boomed in his ear. “I mean
it was stupid of you to fall under that bull and let him step on your face, but Kevin was worried and I figured—”

Jesus, did the guy ever stop babbling? “Fine,” Logan interrupted sticking his finger in his other ear. “I need to talk to you about something.” Why couldn’t the imbecile turn the vacuum off? It was already hard enough to talk.

“What?” Finally Caleb hit the off-switch.

Logan could still hear the television but decided to ignore it. “Have I been a good role model to Kevin?”

He stopped himself for a moment shifting in the bed. Rachel had said he needed to grow up, but he felt like he had done plenty of that since Kevin became his responsibility.

A new baby was certainly a game changer but not something he couldn’t handle, no matter Rachel’s opinion. “Besides being the occasional asshole,” he added for Caleb’s benefit.

“Are you serious?” Caleb asked. They hadn’t had one of these brother-to-brother, heart-to-hearts in a while, probably right after their mother left, and Cassidy dropped Kevin off for the first time.

Caleb made a few moaning noises as he tried to get his bearings. Logan probably shouldn’t have caught the man off-guard, but that’s how it goes with family. Ups and downs are normal.

Logan decided to be patient while his brother digested the question. “Yes, I’m serious,” Logan responded. He was tired of the moaning. “Am I decent at being a father figure to Kevin?”

He scratched his head. “Outside the curse words, calls from Principal Mullin, and all that other crap.”

“Hummm,” Caleb replied. “You never got drunk when he was in your care,” Caleb said, not hiding the puzzled tone in his voice. “If that helps.”

Today, I'm sharing a humorous inner character argument from Surviving the Trap, my upcoming summer release and book one from the Top Dog Pilots series.

~*~

Coming in off a hard landing that would cost her in both the ratings and standings, Maggie Harper charged through the corridors while she silently multi-tasked. She'd started a heated debate with her stomach. For some reason, it didn't want to believe her when she said it could survive two more days with the crappy rations it had been receiving for sustenance. Next, she promised her aching body a well-deserved massage at her earliest convenience if it would only hang in there for a few more days. She saved her overly tired brain for last, swearing she'd let it sleep for at least two straight days if it would cooperate just a little longer and please, for the love of the universe, not let her kill herself by doing something stupid.

She simultaneously cursed the utter stupidity of her superior officers and the military in general. Hell Week could only be the brainchild of some bigwig admiral. It had to be to have qualifications tied to it. Some pencil pusher who thought their wonderful theory on paper would translate beautifully to real life scenarios. Maggie snorted. Funny how it never seemed to work out that way.

The bigwig couldn't possibly have flight experience. If he did, he'd know how ridiculous his little exercise would turn out.

Today's military pilots provided escort for diplomatic dignitaries during interplanetary travel. On a good day, they occasionally dispelled unrest or maybe a border dispute on one of the raucous outer rim planets. If they were really lucky, they might get attached to an exploratory carrier for an opportunity to push out past the charted territories into the unknown.

Those plum assignments were few and far between. They'd been in peacetime for over seventy years. Scuttlebutt had it Hell Week would be a trial launch and set-up to downsize the active flight rosters. A trap, so to speak, to weed out everyone but the best. If that ended up being the case, why the hell did they need this preparedness bullshit?

Making pilots run launch after launch while being deprived of food and sleep was beyond stupid. And really? How the hell did that prepare anyone for a mass assault? The key component to surviving in a situation like that would be adrenaline, and that would be in short supply during qualifications—because no enemy actually shot at them! Duh!

I hope you enjoyed. Release date should be sometime in June.

Extract from Tangled Love
By
Rosemary Morris

Tangled Love is set in England in the reign of Queen Anne Stuart 1702 -1714.

(Note:- Alban, Viscount Chesney’s valet, Roberts, is probably more of a snob than Chesney.

Roberts bowed low. Chesney straightened, regarding him with his face creased in familiar lines of despair.
‘What?’ Chesney sighed. Why did he always feel dishevelled in his manservant’s presence? Roberts was only six years his senior but Chesney could not remember a day when the man did not wear an immaculate black cloth suit, a neat black waistcoat and unwrinkled stockings.
‘Firstly, my lord, the sooner you purchase a London House and employ a cook the better it will be. Secondly, with all due respect, my lord, your appearance grieves me.’
Chesney looked contritely at his black, buckled shoes and his white silk stockings splashed with muck from London’s filthy streets. He knew Roberts aspired to take the credit for him always being dressed to perfection. ‘Do not despair, you shall have the pleasure of dressing me in fine clothes on my wedding day,’ he teased.
