From my soon to be released, CAMPAIGN, A River City Novel, by E. Ayers.
River City novels are about the young urbanites who are the new movers and shakers in this mid-sized eastern USA city. I’ve had so much fun writing about Brad Shoemaker and Kathryn “Ryn” Demary. Ryn was a bit of a challenge to write. I have lots of fun snippets to share with you over the next few weeks.

CAMPAIGN (unedited)

“No more games. We’ve got two whole weeks to spend together talking,” he raised his eyebrows, “and kissing. I’ve wanted to do this for a long time”
His lips slid over hers and the warmth of his kiss flowed over her. When his lips parted from hers, she looked deep into his hazel-green eyes. Her hand caressed his cheek and she smiled.
“Let me take this.” He lifted her carry-on off of her shoulder. “What’s your luggage look like? I’ll get it.”
“Tapestry, pink and green cabbage rose print,” she typed.
He pushed the screen away. “Talk to me.”
She backed away from him and cocked her head. She signed, “You don’t know?”
“What is it? What’s wrong?”
She shook her head as her heart fell into her tummy. “I’m mute,” she signed. She watched him furrow his brows. She grabbed her keyboard, her thumbs flying over the tiny keys, “I’m mute.”
Again, he pushed the screen away without looking at it.
She closed her eyes, reached up, and slightly tugged the scarf from her neck revealing what was left of the scars that crossed her throat.
When she opened her eyes, he was staring at her. The color had drained from his face. The slight shake of his head told her that he now recognized the situation and it was slowly sinking in. Once again, her thumbs flew over the keyboard, “I thought you knew.” She gazed up at him hoping to find some sort of acceptance. “It’s ok. The only thing I can’t do is talk with sound.” She forced a grin. “Remember when I asked you if you knew sign language and you said you had learned a little bit when you were a kid?” She typed with lightning speed. “Remember I told you that you needed to brush up?”
“I thought it was a joke.”

Today I'm offering a peek at my soon-to-be release romance -- The Changeling. In this scene three families' lives intersect when one newborn is replaced with a Fae changeling and that half-human/half Fae baby comes to assume the life a stillborn would have had.
...............................................................................

Frances sipped first then shook her head. “When Agnes went to tidy the mother, she left the sleeping babe in the crib with no one to watch him. And, why would she think he needed to be watched? It was spare minutes only that he was out of her sight. When she went back, another with black hair was in his place. That’s when she ran up to the hill to find me. So distressed she was.”

He nodded. “It was fortunate she did. Another hour and everyone might have known.”

Francis uncovered the bundle in her arms. Looking down, she smiled. “He’s a handsome laddie, don’t ye think. I’m no expert mind, but Agnes and I both suspect the babe is of mixed race. His wee ears…”

Moving to her side, Osgood broke into a smile of his own. The little bundled boy was sleeping. He ran a gentle fingertip over the small, slightly pointed, ear. “Yes, he very well could be. And yes, he’s a handsome little man – dark like Master Evan was. May his soul in heaven forgive us.”

The lady’s maid put a reassuring hand on the head butler’s arm. “He wouldn’t want her ladyship’s heart broken more than it already is. You know how he loved her.”

“I do. As I see it Fanny, the baker’s child is no more – taken away to some Faery hill no doubt, never to be seen again, if the old stories are true. This little boy did not belong with the Benton family anyway. He’s black-haired, for one. He’d grow being different, maybe disliked or mistrusted, even despised by his father as another man’s bastard. You know how people are when they feel something isn’t quite right. The child would suffer for a situation completely out of his control. It harms no one that he be raised a Pendry.”

She nodded. “Yes, you’re right Mr. Osgood. If nothing else, this is the better life of the two.”

Today I'm offering a sample of my upcoming release, HEALED BY A HEART, book 2 of the Destiny in Deadwood series. In this scene our hero and heroine first meet.
................................................................................................Passing in front of the Gem Theater he was knocked to the side by someone barreling out the door. He automatically reached for the person. A decidedly feminine person if the breast in his left hand was any indication.
“Are you all right? Miss?”
“Oh! Unhand me, sir.” The spitfire said in a tone that brooked no argument.
“Yes, ma’am,” he said, releasing her immediately
She fell down onto the boardwalk, “Oh, owww.”
“Ma’am calm down. I’ll help you up, if you let me.”
“I…I seem to have twisted my ankle. I can’t stand up,” she cried softly.
“Here. Take this.” He handed her his parcel, the steaks wrapped in brown paper and tied with string. Then, he scooped her into his arms. “Let’s take you to see Doc Cochran.”
“You can’t carry me all the way there,” she protested. “I’m too heavy and it’s much too far.”
He chuckled, ignored her protests and started walking toward the end of camp where Doc maintained his office. “I think I can manage.”
Doc’s office was at the far eastern side of camp, just outside the Celestial’s village. Liam didn’t know why he kept it there when most of his clientele was at the opposite end of camp. It made no sense to him but Doc must have a reason. Maybe the rent was cheaper outside Chinatown?
He gazed down into her upturned face and into incredibly wide blue eyes, the color of the sky at dusk and was momentarily mesmerized. “I’m Liam Anderson.”
“Eleanor Smith.” She perked up some. “Are you David’s father?”
Liam frowned. “Yes. How do you know my son?”
“He’s come into camp with Becky Finnegan…er…Anderson.” She closed her eyes for a moment, pain evident in the frown on her face. “Becky is my friend. I witnessed her marriage to your brother, Jake.”
Now he understood. “You’re the reverend’s daughter.”

This is from my new book due out on Bookstrand.com in May.

Kaylin’s Pursuit, Book One of the NEW Black Iris Club Series, by Skye Michaels – Coming in May, 2014

When Kaylin awoke the sun was just creeping up over the ocean, and the rays bouncing off the waves in the distance were blinding. She felt the bed beside her and found it was cool. She heard the rhythmic splashing sounds from the lap pool out on the terrace. Jack had left the doors open. He must swim early like she did. She got up and walked out to the terrace in time to see him pull himself up onto the coping and stand up. He was naked. His dark hair was wet and slicked back from a face darkened by morning beard. The sun glinted off the water running down his body and highlighted his strong, masculine features. He looked like a Greek statue silhouetted against the rising sun. God, he’s beautiful. And last night was beautiful. She walked over to him and pressed her nude body up against his. “Yikes, you’re cold.”
He laughed. “The water cools off up here overnight. I guess it’s the strong breeze. If you think that’s cold, try this.” He picked her up and tossed her into the pool. She came to the surface sputtering.
“That was mean!”
He jumped back into the water and pulled her into his arms for a good morning kiss that rocked her world. The warmth of his big body against her cold skin was delicious as she wrapped her legs around his waist. She could get used to good mornings like this. She was warming up rapidly. “Don’t you worry that someone will see you walking around up here naked?”
“No. The trees on the terrace provide a pretty good screen, and we are twenty stories up. Although…” And now he grinned full-out, his dimple winked, and his gray eyes sparkled like chipped ice. “There was that one picture of me in a tabloid…I think they took it from a helicopter.”

From my work-in-progress, His Wicked Highland Ways:

The man arose from the pool stark naked and dripping wet, like a god newly formed. Jeannie took another half step backward and blinked, not entirely believing what me her eyes: some six feet of male all rippling muscles, scars and tattoos with a curtain of sopping, red-brown hair that slapped his shoulder blades and a handsome, dangerous face. His eyes – but after one glance, Jeannie could not look there. They were tawny brown, almost the same color as his hair, and spiked by wet, black lashes.

Her gaze, instead, dropped – and dropped. Sweet, merciful heaven! Was that how men came equipped? She might be a widow in name, but she had never seen her husband, Geordie, naked. Theirs had not been that kind of relationship, or that kind of marriage.

But she had an eyeful now, right enough, and for the life of her could not keep from looking. What a ridiculous, marvelous and daunting appendage! How did men ever walk around like that?

But this man did not attempt to walk. He merely stood in the shallow pool with the water lapping around his … Jeannie’s strained mind supplied the word weapon … and gazed at her as if he found her as unbelievable as she found him.

Ah, and she never should have walked so far down the glen. But dearly as she loved Aggie, Jeannie had needed to escape her chatter for a while and the beautiful day had lured her on.

Into danger, clearly. Who was he? Someone of ill repute, obviously, a traveler, a dangerous outlaw, a madman.

What if he decided to use that terrible weapon on her, and she here alone?

Instead he spoke the way a man might to a frightened horse. “There, now, no need to be afraid. I’ll not harm you.”

This is my newly released book 3 of the Silver Sage Creek novels, Better she Love
A giggling sound darted from a corner of a stall. She took a step and peered through the planks. There, laying on a pile of hay was a couple entangled in a manner shocking to her. Billy’s mouth was clamped over Jaquan’s in such a passionate kiss, Millie couldn’t take her eyes off them. They laid squirming and grunting on a bed of straw in such a conduct that Millie sucked in a loud breath. Quickly, she slammed her hand over her mouth to keep the sound from escaping, but it was too late. They’d heard her.
Slowly, their bodies became still. Billy raised his head to look right at her. He grinned like he wasn’t the least bit embarrassed. In a slow deliberate move, he stood, straightened his unbuttoned shirt, and said, “Miss Millie, can I help you?”
He stepped near her, and with a twinkle in his eyes, ran his fingers through his hair, and reached for his hat, hanging on a post.
Her gaze swung to the girl on the straw bed. Swallowing hard, she backed up to give Jaquan a chance to look presentable before standing. Millie stammered, “I…I,” clamping her mouth shut, she turned, hurried out of the barn, and across the dusty ground toward the corral. Leaning against the planks, she stared straight ahead, drawing in a long breath.
Why was she bothered by the couple embracing in the barn? They were young. Possibly in love. Love. What was that? If so, what was Jaquan to Sam?
Damn it, if she were honest with herself, she knew it was their kiss. She’d never seen anyone kiss so…so, passionately. Edwin never kissed her in such a manner. It wasn’t proper. Was it? Millie pressed her fingers against her lips. Edwin never kissed her lips. Only her cheek. That was proper

TEA LEAVES AND TAROT CARDS has been scheduled for an April 7th publication from the publisher. But it already appears on Kindle. This novel has an endorsement and review from Jayne Ann Krentz/Amanda Quick. It's a highly sensual Regency romance with some paranormal elements. Here is a brief excerpt:

“Let us say I have excellent instincts when it comes to understanding people.”
“And do you understand me?” A gold-tipped patrician brow lifted.
“You are far too complicated.”
“But are you not possessed of second sight? Do you not read minds?” His hand tightened around her waist, and his eyes dropped to her lips as if he desired to kiss her again.
She gently pulled back, scarcely able to ignore the quiver in her stomach. “I believe that we are dancing closer than is deemed proper.”
“Are you here with anyone who will redress such behavior?” His voice, deep, rich and cultured, could have charmed a cobra. But his face was hard, jaded and knowing. He was playing with her, amusing himself at her expense.
“I believe that was a rhetorical question.”
He lifted the stone of her necklace and where his fingers touched her skin she felt as if on flame. Surely, she must have imagined that burning sensation.
“Is this a rough diamond that you wear?”
“Part of a crystal,” she answered. She would not tell him more than that. He need not know about her.
“Unusual, like its owner.”
He pulled her close again and she felt the raw power in him, the strong virile energy of the man. God help her, she found him as attractive as he was intimidating.

Hi, this is from a work in progress that I call SOMETHING TO TALK ABOUT. In this snippet from the beginning of the book, Julia's five year old daughter Ava has been injured while staying at her parents' house. Julia has a confrontation at the hospital with Alex McKenzie, the doctor who treats Ava:

She followed him out of the examining room and stepped to one side as he closed the door. His jaw clenched as he turned to look at her, and fear wrapped itself around her heart and squeezed.

“What did the x-ray find?” she asked.

“A spiral fracture of the right arm.” He paused for a moment and took a deep breath as if trying to control his emotions. “I’ve seen this kind of injury before. A fracture like this can be the result of a fall, but it can also be an indication of child abuse. An arm as small as Ava’s will break like a twig if it’s twisted hard enough. I’m obligated to contact the authorities if I suspect abuse.”

Julia stared at him in mute shock, her brain struggling to process his words, as if trying to translate some unintelligible language. The words child abuse rang in her ears. Finally she found her voice.

“You think someone deliberately hurt her?”

“Her injuries are consistent with abuse.”

“I don’t give a damn what they’re consistent with. Ava has not been mistreated. My mother said she fell down the stairs, and if that’s what she said, then that’s what happened.”

“I believe there’s more to the story than a simple fall.”

“If it comes down to believing you or believing my mother, I’m going with my mother.”

“Perhaps you don’t know your mother as well as you think you do.”

Hood & Fae (Daughters of Little Red Riding Hood) is an Urban Fantasy novella that will be released April 15, 2014 in the special collection Faery Realms: Ten Magical Titles.

BLURB:

Roxy Hood is just trying to make ends meet, to pay her mom’s medical bills. Sure, Roxy takes on some jobs of, ahem, dubious integrity, like pretending that she can speak to the dead. But hey, that’s harmless. It's not like a malevolent ghoul is going to attack her. Or a sexy billionaire will show up trying to buy her red jacket. Or a werewolf will attack Granny Rose. Because that would be whacked.

EXCERPT:

My phone dropped from my hand but I was too stunned by the stranger standing on my front doorstep to notice. He locked his brilliant green eyes on mine and I couldn’t move, or even breathe.

If sexy caused earthquakes, he’d be a Magnitude Wow.

Maybe he was a movie star. That would explain the limo. Hollywood wasn’t far. All sorts of unlikely people showed up, even after six years, to consult my mother.

His suit whispered money. Black suit, black shirt, black tie, black on black, black as a black hole wrapped around his body, stealing light and capturing it into permanent orbit. Underneath the CEO slick, though, he could have been a Navy Seal with that physique. He exuded so much Raw Male, he erased every man I’d ever met from my working memory; I couldn’t even picture last night’s one-hit-wonder any more. All I could see were those emerald eyes in that chiseled marble face. His skin was too pale—he sure didn’t work outside—during the day—but his tightly cropped bullion hair had a military flair. He smelled like all-night-sex on hot sand over a buried fire pit. Opaque heat radiated from him, as if he were a hidden sun in human form, scorching without illuminating, burning in the dark. I wrenched my eyes away from his intense gaze. I could feel my heart sprint like a deer fleeing an erupting volcano.

He didn’t look like the type who believed in ghosts.

Yet…there was an edge to his almost-smile that suggested he might be a man haunted by something.

“Roxy Hood.” He made my name sound dirty, in the most delicious way. He had an accent, antique and British, with something more dangerous and exotic folded inside the cultured cadence. “I believe you dropped this.”

He handed me back my phone.

“Th…thank you,” I stuttered. Real smooth, Roxy.

It didn’t matter. He was leagues out of my league.

“I need your favor, mademoiselle.” He smiled then, every so slightly, ever so understated. The way his hinted smile punched all sense right out of my head, I should have called the cops and had him arrested for assault and battery. If he ever full out grinned at me, it would kill me.

“Shortly after my maman’s death, there was an estate sale of some of her effects.” His smile was gone, replaced by somber intensity. “Including a garment which I desire to recover for…sentimental reasons. It has no real market value, but it was dear to her, and therefore means much to me. A lady’s garment. Unfortunately, I don’t remember exactly what it was.” His green-eyed gaze grew even more focused. “Except the color—crimson; and the fact that it was most likely a cape or coat of some kind—with a hood.”

He paused.

“Uh,” I said. Oh, Roxy, you scintillating conversationalist, you.

“I believe your mother may have purchased it,” he said. “And I would like to purchase it back.”

Hood & Fae is the first in a new Urban Fantasy series Daughters of Little Red Riding Hood by Tara Maya, author of The Unfinished Song, a romantic epic fantasy series. Hello,

Today's juicy snippet is from Down in Mexico, the first book of my South of the Border series by my alter ego, Skylin O'Thomas.

~*~

He finally broke down and reached for her hand, holding it in his, his thumb making circular motions over her skin, sending tingles along her arm. The look in his eyes, those wicked, wonderful blue eyes, took her breath away. The naked expression and myriad of emotions in his almost undid her. As usual, when things got intense… they communicated without speaking.

Five years.

Yeah.

Why?

You know why.

It sucks.

Yeah.

I thought…

I know… you had to.

He would've spent all his time looking for her instead of the people who 'killed' her.

They both knew it.

A ghost of a smile hit his eyes.

But not anymore.

No?

No. It's safe. You're safe.

Kiernan almost buckled, her relief palpable. "So… it worked." She waited a beat. "Took you guys long enough."

Lars laughed. And it sounded wonderful. She'd missed that almost more than anything else.

"It wasn't easy chasing down everyone in that little operation."

She could only imagine. And she didn't want to know how many they'd lost doing so. It would make her depressed.

She smiled instead… because she hadn't lost him. "God, it's good to see you." She tugged Lars forward and wrapped her arms around him.

Solid. Real. Here.

They were free.

It finally hit her.

Free.

To be together.

And she wanted him. Needed him.

Now.

Right this moment.

Five long, damn years and it all rushed back, the way she felt about him. Kiernan shoved his shirt off his shoulders then yanked her tank top over her head. Started on his shorts while he peeled hers down. Their eyes met and he hauled her to him, mouth crushing hers in a bruising kiss. He lifted her, walked the ten steps across the patio to back her up against the shingle siding, never once breaking the kiss.

I hope you enjoyed.

Here's a snippet from the first chapter of my WIP, The Trouble With Dying, which I'll be releasing later this year.

---

I draw a shaky breath. That’s me down there. Me.

Gran watches me watching—me.

My brain doesn’t want to believe the message my senses are sending. “Why don’t I recognise myself?”

“That’s just the way it works, darling. When you’re on the other side you recognise everything: your home, your family, everything you left behind. But you’re not on the other side. You’re . . . here.”

Wherever the hell ‘here’ is.

“Then why did I recognise you?”

“Because I’ve met you halfway.” Gran looks at her watch. “Right. Chop chop. You’ve conquered the first hurdle: acknowledgement. But we don’t have time on our side, so let’s not dilly dally.”

It doesn’t feel real. None of this does. It’s like I’m looking at it all through smoky glass.

“Darling,” she says, gentle but firm, “this isn’t the time for navel gazing.”

Navel gazing? I try to keep the hurt out of my eyes but, dammit, how can she say that? I’m not navel gazing; I’m trying to get my head around this out-of-body experience that just won’t stop. Hell, it’s not every day a girl is woken by her dead gran, discovers she can’t move, dangles from the ceiling like a forgotten party streamer, and doesn’t even recognise her own face.

“Faith, this is important. Life-and-death important.”

The words fall like stones in my gut. “You mean I’m dying?”

Gran hesitates. “Your situation is . . . delicate.”

“Define ‘delicate’.”

She doesn’t.

I study her face for clues. “Am I dying? Just tell me.”

Gran was never this quiet when she was alive.

My heart races. “Dead?”

I look down at the body in the bed. I’m pretty sure I see the rise and fall of her—my—chest, but I’m not sure about anything anymore.

--

I hope you enjoyed it.

Here's a snippet from my soon to be released western historical romance, Rowena's Hellion: #2 The Victorians

"Rowena, love. Are you sure you want to do this?" God, she was voracious. Having had no experience with women other than whores, he was amazed at her desires. He'd always heard Victorian women were quite the prudes. Perhaps she had no idea how she was affecting him.
"We will be married soon, is that not your plan? So why can't we enjoy what our bodies are crying out for?" Her hands explored on their own while the deep kissing continued. She made sweet little sounds in her throat and, without pulling away from his kiss, worked the fabric down off his arms.
He lay back, forced himself to wait to see what she would do next. Unlike her, he was naked. Fully exposed. That might stop her.
If not he'd let her have her way with him. It would be quite enjoyable. "Sweetheart," he murmured, wrapped his arms around her and pulled her close.
Ripples of goose bumps followed her touch trailing over his ribs to finger at his nipples, which she began to kiss, suck and lick.
What a sensation. It was all he could do to keep from ripping her clothes off. When she ran her tongue along his ribcage and around his belly button, he fumbled at the partially concealed breasts. She lifted her skirts and straddled him, coming down hard on his erection and saying Oh in a long, drawn-out trembly voice.
Dear God in heaven. No lady of the evening had made him feel such a passion. He thought he might go blind.
"Rowena. Sweet one," he said, mouth between her breasts.
Perhaps she wasn't at all what he'd thought when he first saw her sitting on a bench in the sunlight, hair blazing as if a halo circled her head. The nuns smiling and patting all three girls' shoulders. Damn their souls to hell, no better than selling those three to him. Rowena's Hellion To be Released in 2014
