Photo Interview: Mariana Gabrielle

EQ Welcomes Mariana Gabrielle

EQ: Welcome to EQ! Tell us a little bit about yourself!

Hi! Thanks for having me!

Mariana Gabrielle is a pseudonym for Mari Christie, a historical fiction and Regency romance writer in Denver, Colorado. In my everyday life, I am a professional business writer, editor, and designer, so my life essentially revolves around the written word. Sad, but true: I have no other hobbies or interests.

EQ: Tell us a little bit about your most recent release.
My first Regency, Royal Regard, is coming out Nov. 28, but is on pre-order now. It is the story of an older woman who has travelled the world as an ambassador’s wife, returned to London with her dying husband. Bella is inherently shy and would prefer to retire to a life in the country, but King George IV and the men in the marriage mart have different plans for her.

Everyone is invited to join the Facebook Launch Party Nov. 28, 3-9 pm MST: https://www.facebook.com/events/299686360237365/ where there will be numerous giveaways from me and other Regency authors.

I am also running a Rafflecopter giveaway for a free copy of the book during the month of November at http://www.rafflecopter.com/rafl/display/16e4beaa2/

At the beginning of Royal Regard, Bella and her husband return to London after fifteen years travelling the world on a frigate much like this one. It has never been my conscious goal to be a world traveler, but a whole lot of my characters show such a tendency.

Both inspiration and my distraction, I rescued two feral kittens about 6 months ago. India (on the left) and Burton are the number one reason deadlines fly over my head, the number two reason for typos in my manuscripts, and the best reason—ever—to get up from the computer. (Okay, so I have one other interest…)

My great-great uncle, Percy Whaley, was a world-renowned journalist in the 1920s – 1950s, and the person I credit for passing me the genetic predisposition to writing. I loosely based my mainstream historical, Blind Tribute, on his life.

My mom, Christie Whaley, was a frustrated artist who died young without fulfilling her professional potential. Not coincidentally, she also turned to fiction writing in her last years, but did not finish her manuscript, Feminist Fairy Tales. She is a primary reason I am compelled not only to write, but also to finish novels and publish them. This triptych is/are my favorite piece(s) of hers, representing (to me) breaking out of both obscurity and traditional roles for women.
