Lost That Lovin' Feeling: A Short Prequel by Bettye Griffin
First of the LOVE WILL series (that also includes Love Will Follow and Love Will Grow)
--------------------------------------------------------
She gazed out the window, not really seeing the scenery of the North Chicago suburbs as they sped by. She thought about how Sienna looked so forward to playing with Kylie Norwood. Tierney had never planned for Sienna being an only child. She felt guilty, because she knew sometimes her daughter was lonely. If everything had gone the way she hoped, she would’ve had another baby at around the same time Tracy had little Kylie…but Steven’s layoff had changed everything. Another pregnancy would’ve been disastrous. She’d gone off birth control pills in favor of a more economical diaphragm. Although inconvenient, she figured it was better for her health as well. As the tension between her and Steven increased, the frequency of their sex life decreased, and Tierney didn’t see much point in ingesting a pill every day when she and Steven had sex maybe eight days out of thirty…

Economics no longer ruled her life. Not only had Steven sold his concept and script for a six-figure sum, but there was potential to make much more, writing scripts for the series the cable network planned to produce. Tierney couldn’t deny feeling relieved that the financial pressure was off, but whenever she tried to get excited about what the future held, she couldn’t do it. It was time to admit the cold, hard truth…that after two long years of struggle and resentment, her feelings for her husband weren’t as as strong anymore.

“You okay, Tierney?”

His voice brought her back to the present, and she turned at him. Steven knew her better than anyone, with the possible exception of her mother. He could always tell when she had something on her mind.

Who knew? Maybe this little weekend getaway was just what she and Steven needed to recapture what they’d lost…

Cassie's Hope, by Adriana Kraft
Shaking her head, Cassie grabbed a hoof pick from her back pocket, lifted one of Hope's front hooves, and began extracting dirt and pebbles.
"Nice lookin' filly."
Cassie groaned at the strange deep voice and the too-familiar line. Couldn't men anywhere be a little more original?
Dropping the hoof, Cassie glanced across Hope's back and gasped. The deeply tanned hunk behind the voice had shoulders that stretched taut a pale yellow polo shirt covered, in part, with a thin buckskin vest. The wide cowboy buckle appeared unnecessary to hold up well contoured Levi's. A sweat-stained brown Stetson, tipped low, cast a light shadow across his facial features. His worn boots were those of a working man. This was no drugstore cowboy.
He stepped closer. She could make out a scowl. Dark eyes snapped a foreboding anger. Raven black hair framed chiseled features, searing them into Cassie's brain. Her toes curled involuntarily. She rubbed Hope's coat vigorously. Who the hell was he? And to top it off, he didn't even seem to notice her. His eyes appraised only the horse.
"Thanks," she mumbled, ducking down by Hope's flank.
The handsome stranger walked around the horse. "Very nice," he drawled at last.

False Pretences 1815

A Traditional Regency Novel By Rosemary Morris

Annabelle’s mind teemed with doubts, questions, and uncertainties. Why had her guardian’s identity never been revealed? She frowned. Her nostrils flared. Why should a French baron, who had never met her, agree to marry her?
Under no circumstances would she wed a man of Baron de Beauchamp’s years. For the last thirteen years, she had only left The Beeches when she attended church with her teachers and the rest of the schoolgirls, or when she rode in the company of others. Before she married, she needed to spread her wings beyond the confines of her school. She longed to know what the world beyond the high brick walls around The Beeches was like, to meet people outside those walls and see different places.
She sighed, bewildered and confused by the proposed change from schoolgirl to married lady. It seemed her guardian was not short of funds. Instead of the high-handed order for her to marry, a London Season could have been arranged. She caught her lower lip between her teeth and winced. Did her birth preclude her from being introduced to the ton? She must face facts. Perhaps she was a commoner whose birth would never permit her to enter polite society unless she married into it and, even if she did, there would be those who looked askance at her. Whatever her true circumstances, she shared Fanny’s wish to discover what life was like outside Miss Chalfont’s establishment. Her hands trembled. What did she really want? She knew the answer to her question. More than anything else, she wanted to discover the truth about her past and find out who her parents were. She needed to know and understand her place in the world.
