(Sorry for the snip - just trying to play by the rules. LOL)
If you love a sexy story, an adorable little boy, a meddling grandmother, and a slightly older heroine, you'll love this River City novel. River City books never have to be read in order so jump in!

A CHILD'S HEART Trent and Cassie's Story (A River City Novel)
by E. Ayers

Following his dad into the small bathroom, Shawn stood on the toilet and put first one knee and then the other on the edge of the sink so he could reach into the cabinet. It was his job to put the toothpaste on the brushes. **SNIP** Then his father allowed him to use a little shaving cream and a razor without a blade. When they were done, they washed their faces and Shawn mimicked his dad by rubbing his fingers over his jaw.

“I think you’ve got it, son. Doesn’t look as if you’ve left a single whisker.”

Shawn grabbed his father’s face and inspected it carefully. “How come we have to get all dressed up?”

“There’s going to be a lot of people there tonight with money. We’ve got to look our best, and we want to look nice for Ms. Jones, being we’re her guests.”

“I think she’s pretty.”

“I agree.” Trent put a few drops of aftershave into the boy's hand.

My first Gaslight Mystery may be the most straightforward, yet it's still my favorite, for the dance between a brash Irishman and his closeted roommate. Ten sentences will suffice:

There, like a grizzly bear immersed in a tiny honey pot, sat Michael McCree in the small claw footed bathtub.

Again Simon felt the pounding of blood in his face and he turned to leave.

“Nay, Simon. Bolt the goddamn door, man, an’ stay. We don’t have all day to bugger around with fine courtesies.”

“I…am sorry…about last night.”

“Get in the tub, lad.”

“No, I—”

“Damn, Simon, grow a pair of testicles, will ye? Do I look like a mad rapist?”

Excerpt from Courting Jealousy

Her jaw dropped. Sexy men didn’t come on to her. She was pretty and she kept in shape, but she was low-key. Handsome men like Dane didn’t tend to look outside the limelight for girls like her.

Yet when he leaned more heavily into her, she felt the evidence of his interest against her belly.

She propped her hands against his chest, and heat seeped into her fingertips. He was hard and muscled, yet she swore she could feel his heart pounding as hard as hers.

“But why?” she insisted.

“Why wouldn’t I be attracted to you?” he asked, flicking her nipple in chastisement. “From what I’ve seen, you’re sweet, giving, and adventurous. And in case you didn’t know it, you’re stunningly beautiful.”

He dropped his head and whispered into her ear. “I want to kiss you for real.”

Cinderella Blue: Love means never having to say, "You're under arrest."

"Why would a sweet thing like you have a gun?" Benton asked.

"Sweet thing? Lower your gun–lay it on the floor," she snapped.

Everything happened at once. A man rushed from behind her, slammed into her, and sent her flying into Bruce. They went down in a tangle of arms, legs, and miles of white satin, and she came up snarling.

Bruce leaped up, gun in hand. "Looks like you lost your gun, sweet thing."

"Don't call me sweet thing," she snarled. She whirled, and Benton saw nothing but a white blur just before he felt agony in his hand, but his gasp of pain was cut off by a roundhouse kick to his solar plexus, and he hit the floor like a felled tree.

Wheezing, he tried to rise, but the blonde stood over him with her gun--and his--pointed at him. With a smile, she said, "Uh uh, sweet thing–you stay right where you are."

Bruce groaned–not from pain so much as humiliation–he'd never live this down.

From La Déesse Noire: The Black Goddess, coming out June 10, currently available on pre-sale.

Visnagar, India - 1802
Prologue

The woman’s breath was heavy, voice coarse, rough, like the skin of a rhinoceros.

“Kali,” the woman whispered, “you must go now, before they come for you. You and Kamala must go.”

Air blew hot as a leopard’s breath, forcing steam from the wastes the girl had sluiced again and again from her mother’s skin. The sandalwood smell of the rock hills infused the room, washing clean the scent of the next life, softening the sharp sounds of women gossiping in the rice fields, opening her mind to the cloudless sky. Over the chirrups and tittering of children running on the riverbank, the sound of one lonely girl chanting and keening slipped under the door.

“Mata, quiet yourself. Your mantra, Mata. Aum Namaḥ Sivaaya.”

She tugged the next of one-hundred-eight Bodhi beads through her mother’s grasping fingertips, counting prayers that would have no end. “Pray with me, Mata. Aum Namaḥ Sivaaya.”

“They will never forgive your father, and Shahu will not shield you. You must take your sister and go to Mayuri in London. Go to the Vikanṭa. He will protect you."

Vladimir was beginning to doubt his wisdom in taking the massive bay colt. Knowing Krzysztof's taste in horses, Vladimir wasn't surprised to find the conformation and bearing of the young horse were second to none he'd seen in this country. Looking at the piles of furs in the barn, he guessed Krzysztof hadn't been to town for a while, hopefully long enough that no one they met would recognize the growing three-year-old horse.
Your mind wanders Vladimir, he roused himself. The fact remains that in this harsh part of the world, taking what you need to survive is acceptable.
By his actions, however, he'd turned himself into a horse thief as well as a murderer.
Please God, let me find Krzysztof's companion and his secret, before whatever passes for the law out here finds me.

An excerpt from my YA comic urban fantasy/romance, AN ELFY ON THE LOOSE, featuring my hero, Bruno the Elfy, and his girlfriend, Sarah:

* * * * * Excerpt Starts Now * * * * *

"Quickly! Get in here!" Sarah pulled Bruno through the kitchen, toward her bedroom. "We have about half a minute, no more. I’ll go and distract them until they leave. I definitely don’t want them knowing they now have two Elfys to torment, rather than just one!"

"That’s a good point," Bruno mused softly, just as Sarah pulled him to her door.

"Get in, quick! I’ll make sure they don’t come in here."

"You said before they never do," Bruno interrupted.

"True, but there’s always a first time. Anyway, since they didn’t see you, hopefully they will not sense you either. Now, get inside!" Sarah pushed him inside the door.

Bruno whirled, but wasn’t fast enough to stop Sarah. He did, however, hear her say through the door, "I’ll be back as soon as I can. We’re really in for it now."

Bruno went and sat on Sarah’s bed, running his hands across Sarah’s elaborately embroidered bedspread, even more confused than before.

What in all the worlds and time was going on here?

He turned to look at her questioningly. “Sweet
Jesus, how did you get in here?”
She smiled. First at him, and then more timidly
towards the surgeon. Yet, she didn’t reply.
“It’s often seen in athletes,” the surgeon replied
to Tamara. “One wrong move—” He didn’t finish
the sentence, but nodded towards the knee.
Oliver knew what he meant anyway. One wrong
move could mean anything, but in his case, he
mightn’t be playing baseball for a while.
“So now what?” Tamara asked.
Annoyed, Oliver shot her a look. “Out!”
Both the surgeon and Tamara looked at him in
surprise.
“My knee, my injury, my questions.” He raised
his eyebrow slightly. “My privacy.”
