This is from my latest, a longish short story called A KILTED CHRISTMAS. The opening words of the second chapter, from Burns' pov: ~~

He listened to the sound of deadness, that particular vacuum devoid of human contact, which signaled an end to their conversation.

I wonder if Thomas has a clue … his way of saying goodbye always chips another fragment off my heart.

The story is the 4th of a series:
#gay #romance #mystery novellas, in this order:
BURNS TOO DEEP / THE DUNDEE LAW / RED, RED ROSE /
A KILTED CHRISTMAS (52-page story)

'Sguir! Aleksandra, stop!' Aleksandra heard Scotty bark, and then continue in a low, steady voice. 'Wouldn't move, 'f I was you, Xavier. Her da's Cossack-trained and it 'pears she is too.' Scotty chuckled.
